uMnikelo Sonic Sessions presents Herbie Tsoaeli and Friends An intimate afternoon of music, listening, conversation and gathering. Sunday, 6 September 2026 | Doors 15:00 | Performance 17:00 | MMArtHouse, 1 Hillcrest Avenue, Blairgowrie, Randburg, 2194 | Tickets R500 There are musicians we hear, and there are musicians through whom we learn how to listen. Herbie Tsoaeli belongs firmly to the latter tradition. Affectionately known as uMalume , Tsoaeli is one of South Africa's most respected bassists, composers and arrangers. Raised in Nyanga East in Cape Town, he emerged from a musical world that has profoundly shaped South African jazz and has gone on to perform alongside some of the country's most important musicians, including Abdullah Ibrahim, Zim Ngqawana, Bheki Mseleku, Louis Moholo-Moholo and Winston Mankunku Ngozi. His debut album, African Time , won the 2013 South African Music Award for Best Jazz Album. Tsoaeli describes his own musical philosophy as Jazz Moya, music shaped by spirit, memory and the histories from which it emerges. For this special edition of uMnikelo Sonic Sessions, Herbie Tsoaeli and friends enter the intimate surroundings of MMArtHouse for an afternoon of extraordinary music, listening and gathering. At the heart of Sonic Sessions is the opportunity to experience musicians at close range, in a setting that allows the music and the personalities behind it to breathe. Herbie and friends will take us through an intimate musical journey, with moments of conversation, storytelling and reflection emerging naturally along the way. Set within the warmth of the House, this is an invitation to settle in, listen closely and experience one of South Africa’s great musicians in a setting unlike the conventional concert stage. About uMnikelo uMnikelo means the offering. It is MMArtHouse's invitation to gather differently. Rooted in music, poetry, moving image, conversation, food and hospitality, uMnikelo treats the artistic encounter as an act of offering between artist and audience, host and guest. Rather than separating performance from the life around it, uMnikelo creates an environment in which listening, eating, talking and encountering art become part of the same experience. Guests are invited not simply to attend a performance, but to spend an afternoon in the House. uMnikelo Sonic Sessions is curated by MMArtHouse Creative Directors, Dr Siyabonga Njica and Mr Sechaba Nkitseng. Come early. Enter the House. Encounter the collection. Share a drink. Stay for the music.
