ToGather Ways We Gather 24 October 2026 · Sufi Temple, Cape Town · 14:30–22:00 An afternoon into evening of breath, voice, movement, making, food and sound. There are many ways we gather. To celebrate. To create. To mourn. To remember. To listen. To belong. ToGather is an invitation to spend an afternoon and evening exploring what becomes possible when we make time to be present with ourselves, with one another, and with the creative intelligence of the body. On 24 October, a small community will gather at the Sufi Temple in Cape Town for eight hours of embodied practice, creativity, conversation, nourishment and sound. This is not a conference. It is not a retreat. And there is nothing you need to know, perform or become before arriving. It is simply a space to gather differently. The Journey Our time together moves through a carefully designed arc: Breath • Voice • Movement • Making • Food • Sound Each movement opens naturally into the next. We begin with the breath, the rhythm that has accompanied us since our first arrival into this world. From breath, we encounter the voice . From voice, we enter movement and the intelligence of the body . Movement takes us toward the hands and the act of making . Making leads us toward the table, where we eat and gather in communion . And finally, we return together through sound, stillness and listening , allowing the experiences of the day to settle into the body. The gathering moves from afternoon light into evening, giving us time not only to participate, but to arrive, encounter one another, rest, eat, listen and integrate. Ways We Gather During the afternoon, the gathering will open into three experiential pathways. You will have an opportunity to encounter practices including: Breath, Voice & Somatics An exploration of breath, embodied awareness and the natural voice. A space to listen inwardly, soften habitual holding and explore expression through the living instrument of the body. Movement A guided embodied practice exploring movement, presence, relationship and the ways our bodies communicate before language. No dance or movement experience is required. Clay & Vessel Making A tactile exploration led by Sisonke Papu, working with clay as material, memory and form. Through the hands, participants will shape a vessel to hold what is present, what is emerging, or what they wish to carry forward. A quiet act of making that invites listening, imagination and intention. No previous experience in breathwork, voice, movement, clay or sound is required. Come as you are. The Table Gathering is also nourishment. As afternoon becomes evening, we will come together around a shared communal meal . This is not an interval between activities. It is part of ToGather. Time to eat. Meet someone. Exchange stories. Laugh. Rest. And experience the simple intimacy of sharing food with people who may have been strangers only hours before. The communal meal is included in your ticket. Returning Through Sound We close together. After moving through different practices and experiences during the day, everyone returns to one shared space for an immersive sound exploration . Voice, indigenous instruments, resonance, silence and deep listening become a way of allowing the day to settle. Nothing more to accomplish. Nothing more to learn. Simply time to receive. And then, gently, we return to the world outside. Who Is ToGather For? ToGather is for anyone curious about another way of being together. You might be an artist. A caregiver. A facilitator. A teacher. A parent. A maker. Someone working with people. Someone moving through transition. Or simply someone longing for an afternoon where life is allowed to move at a different pace. You do not need to identify as creative, spiritual or experienced in any of the practices we will explore. Curiosity is enough. Your Guides ToGather will be held by three practitioners working across complementary embodied and creative practices. Sisonke Papu / KHNYSA | Ceremony, Gathering & Sound Multidisciplinary artist, breath practitioner, indigenous instrument builder, and founder of PHILA. Sisonke holds the overarching journey of ToGather, opening and tending the collective space before returning as KHNYSA with collaborating musicians for the closing sound exploration. Cebolenkosi Zuma | Movement, Presence & Embodiment Cebolenkosi Zuma, also known as The Dancing Herbalist, is a performing artist, choreographer and movement facilitator whose practice brings South African indigenous dance into conversation with contemporary movement. His work explores movement, sound and African folk traditions as embodied ways of knowing, with particular attention to their spiritual and communal dimensions. Dr Sara Matchett | Breath, Voice & Somatics Dr Sara Matchett is an Associate Professor at UCT’s Centre for Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies, a Lead Trainer of Fitzmaurice Voicework®, performance-maker and advanced breathwork practitioner. Her practice explores breath as the connective thread between body, voice, imagination and emotion , creating embodied pathways towards presence, creativity and expression. Zukisani Mrwetyana | Clay, Food & Communion Zukisani Mrwetyana is a culinary culturalist, maker and founder of Masipheke, whose practice brings indigenous foodways, clay and communal gathering into conversation. Working with food and hand-built clay vessels, he explores the table as a place of memory, making and relationship. The Breath & Voice and Movement workshops will unfold simultaneously, each exploring our shared inquiry through a different practice; we then all gather again through clay exploration. Choose your preferred workshop when booking and you receive an email from PHILA closer to the day of the gathering; places are limited and allocated on a first-booked basis. We gather as one field. And the simple possibility of being together without needing to perform. On 24 October, thirty-three of us will gather in Cape Town. For an afternoon. Into evening. Please bring a yoga mat, blanket, or something comfortable to sit or lie and something warm on as we move through the afternoon and evening together. Come gather with us.
