Reel to Reality Film Festival is an annual short film festival that celebrates African and African diasporic cinema—where the past, present, and future converge through a showcase of bold, unique and uncompromising voices. The festival exists to amplify the voices of emerging and independent filmmakers of African descent, cutting across borders and socio-political divides to foreground auteur, emotionally gripping and thought provoking stories. Known for its bold film programming, Reel to Reality Film Festival aims to demonstrate the versatility and creativity of African filmmakers through immersive and unique cinema experiences. Every year, the festival focuses on curating a program that brings about a real cultural and social experience, to provide unique cinema-watching experiences, anchored by strong African voices. After 5 incredible years of film festival hosting in various venues and spaces, we widen our curation abilities to a new theme in the 2026 edition with “An African City”, to celebrate 6 years of diverse African cinematic expressions. The theme encapsulates the Pan African spirit of African societies in metropolis territories, articulating the rich multiculturalism, resilience, history and drive of African people across the world. An African city imagines a unified engine of cultural, social, economic vibrancy and growth. Our curatorial approach blends the expressions of African diasporic cinema, archive, culture, migration, community and sociopolitical markers, to reimagine and explore the rich iconography, artistic expression of African cities and its peoples, through this powerful theme, to curate an immersive, profoundly human and communal experience through our film festival theme. Welcome to an African City! Festival Dates & Venues: Johannesburg | 17–18 October 2026 Venue: Artistry 22 Freeman Dr, Sandown, Sandton, 2196 Cape Town | 24 October 2026 Venue TBC
