THE KING OF INSTRUMENTS GETS A NIGHT OUT THE ORGAN IS ALIVE! After months of painstaking restoration, St Martin’s magnificent pipe organ – the largest in any Johannesburg parish church – is alive again. On Saturday, 26 September, two of South Africa’s finest organists will give it a proper night out in one extraordinary evening of music. Whatever you think an organ concert is, come and be astounded by what a pipe organ can really do. This is not the boring, badly-played church music you might be picturing. Theo van Wyk and Pharny Chrysler-Fox will take the instrument’s 3,166 pipes from hushed intimacy to full-throated power, with something for everyone, whether you think you like organ music or not. A big screen with two cameras will relay live, close-up footage of the performers’ hands and feet at the console, so you can watch exactly how the magic happens. MEET YOUR ORGANISTS Theo van Wyk is Professor of Music at the University of Pretoria. He has performed at venues including Westminster Abbey, tours frequently across the USA and has recently returned from performing in Germany. He has inspired more young South Africans to take up the organ than perhaps anyone else in the country. Pharny Chrysler-Fox has performed extensively across Europe and the United States, and is celebrated for something not every organist attempts: transcriptions – taking music written for orchestras, pianos, even film scores, and making it sing on the pipe organ, alongside the instrument’s own great repertoire, performed to the highest standard. Good to know • A chance to meet Theo and Pharny in person. • Car guards will be on duty all evening. • Step-free access – the doors are reached via ramp and are easily wheelchair-navigable.
