Khaya Mahlangu at Sankayi Jazz Series Sankayi Jazz Series welcomes one of South Africa’s most respected jazz musicians, saxophonist Khaya Mahlangu, on Friday, 11 September. Born in Soweto and raised during the liberation struggle, Mahlangu has spent more than five decades immersed in jazz. His career has taken him from intimate jazz clubs in South Africa to major festivals across the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa, building a reputation for performances that connect deeply with audiences. As a composer, Mahlangu’s music brings together traditional African rhythms and contemporary jazz, reflecting his commitment to preserving the essence of African music while continuing to explore its possibilities. He is also passionate about mentorship and regularly shares the stage with emerging musicians, helping to carry the jazz tradition forward. At 70, Mahlangu remains a dynamic and evolving presence, bringing his seasoned musical voice together with the fresh perspectives of younger collaborators.
