Hosted in a focused, private studio setting, you will learn to master the expressive power of light, shadow, and form under the direct, academy-style guidance of an industry professional. About Your Instructors Kamogelo Masemola Kamogelo Masemola discovered his passion for visual arts during primary school, where he attended afternoon classes and won several art competitions. Guided by mentors Paul Madi Phala, Michael Zikhali, and Buti Masike, he initially aimed for a career in industrial design but was drawn to unrestricted creativity and pursued studies at Fuba (School of Dramatic and Visual Arts). An abstract artist deeply rooted in the vibrant culture of Kwa-Thema, has made significant contributions to the local art scene. Born and raised in this community, Kamogelo's work is not only a reflection of his personal artistic journey but also a testament to his commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists. His efforts extend beyond the canvas, focusing on enhancing the artistic capabilities of Kwa-Thema's youth. Kamogelo's dedication to rebranding and uplifting his hometown's artistic landscape has earned him recognition and appreciation from the community and beyond, highlighting his role as a pivotal figure in the evolution of Kwa-Thema's art industry. Masemola co-founded BLAQUEINQ Contemporaries (BIC), a movement in EastRand/Ekurhuleni that brings together professional and emerging artists across various disciplines. In 2015, Kamogelo moved to August House in Johannesburg to focus on his career as a full-time studio artist. Nhlanhla Dumakude Nhlapho Nhlanhla Nhlapo – (b. 1988, Frankfurt, Free State, South Africa) studied a four year fine arts degree programme at Tshwane University of Technology specializing in painting and has been teaching painting there since 2013. Nhlapo’s practice takes Dutch masters’ techniques and 17th century Dutch landscape painting as a point of departure, situating it in the South African landscape and his hometown of Frankfurt in particular and populating it with images from his family albums. The works engage both with the nature and cultural context of depiction in art history as well as the unspoken and unacknowledged politics of trauma within carried through landscape and implicit trauma of colonization, loss and confrontation between modernity and tradition in family photographs. Through many personal and day to day conflicts growing up in rural Free State and later moving to Gauteng and City Life, Nhlapo endeavors to create a personal narrative with this body of work, a symbolic longing to re-connect to the Land of his Ancestors; His reference to the Dutch Baroque Interior paintings reflects the firsthand experience of both his late grandmother and mother being Domestic workers and the hardship he experienced with their absence in his formative years during Apartheid. Nhalapo was awarded the 2018 Unisa Academic Portrait Commission of Chairperson Mr Simelane and the 2018 Artist residency at Lacreusette in France Boussac with Louis Jansen van Vurren. His first solo exhibition was with Lizamore Associates in 2019.
