Join the Johannesburg Bach Choir as we celebrate the arrival of Spring on Sunday 6 September 2026. Our Spring concert will be at St Martins-in-the-veld Anglican Church, 43 Cradock Avenue, Rosebank. Once again, we will be delighted to host popular tenor Janré van Jaarsveld who has become a firm favourite with our audiences. Accompaniment will be provided by the young Bienvenu Muyombo whose skill on the organ and piano will amaze you! Top of the programme will be two choruses from JS Bach's Cantata 116. This is the work that has been set for us to sing at next year's Bachfest in Leipzig. Bach's great skill in both counterpoint and chorale composition is shown to perfection in this work. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with his joyful "Sparrow Mass", will follow the great JSB. While the mass is a piece of devotional music, Mozart's personality and creative flair shine through from start to finish. The mass gets its name from the chirping figure which appears a number of times. John Rutter's works are always an audience favourite, and "Look at the world" will be meet expectations and be a joyful reminder of Spring after a long, sometimes cold winter. We'll look forward to the coming summer with Edward Elgar's "As torrents in summer" - but be hopeful that the rain will stay away on 6 September for our afternoon concert! "Etz Chayim" is a Hebrew song about the Tree of Life. With a gentle lilting tune, it represents eternal life, wisdom and the Torah in the Jewish tradition. A particularly special feature will be two compositions by South African composers, both of whom will be at the concert. "We sing for the love of music" by our very own Mandy Collins will be premiered, and Billy Joubert will honour us to listen to his "Another day". The concert will end with a burst of energy as we sing "Rhythm of Life" from the 1960s musical "Sweet Charity". And, of course, you're invited to our legendary tea after the concert with an abundance of sweet and savoury goodies on offer - all included in the ticket price.
